Public Transport in Hong Kong

The transport system of Hong Kong is able to satisfy all the needs of tourists. The land transport comprises the MTR (Mass Transit Railway), taxis, buses, minibuses and tramways (only on Hong Kong Island). Also, there are ferry services between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, and to the Outlying Islands. You can easily get to most tourist areas of the city by MTR, but there are a few tourist areas and spots, which you can only get to by bus or taxi, such as Ocean Park, Repulse Bay, Stanley Market or Aberdeen.
For those who plan to stay in Hong Kong for a few days, it is a good idea to buy an Octopus card. It is used to pay for rides on almost all modes of public transport.
An Octopus card is a rechargeable contactless stored value smart card, which is used to pay for rides on public transport as well as for payment in many shops.
The MTR connects HK Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and Lantau Island. The stations are located in all major places and almost all of them have multiple exits.
Hong Kong taxis are a very convenient and inexpensive way of point-to-point travel throughout the city. There are three types: red, green and blue.
Bus routes cover almost all areas of Hong Kong, except the Outlying Islands. Bus services start from early morning till midnight and their frequency is high.
Ferries are served by several companies and they are the only transport to Outlying Islands, such as Lamma Island, Cheung Chau Island or Peng Chau Island.
Trams operate only on the northern side of Hong Kong Island and almost all routes pass through the city center (Central, Amiralty, Wan Chai or Causeway Bay).

Airport Transfer Services

Located ~35km from the city center, Hong Kong International Airport provides excellent transportation services between the airport and the city. There are direction signs to each mode of airport transfer in the arrival hall.

Hong Kong visitors have several options of how to get to and from Hong Kong International Airport. These are airport buses, the Airport Express, taxis and limousine services; each has its own pros and cons. No matter what type you choose, the transfer will be pleasant and smooth.
